Ian Oglivy
Measle and the Wrathmonk

The book Measle and the Wrathmonk is about a boy named Measle who lives with his horrible guardian, Basil. Basil is a horrible guardian because he doesn't feed Measle properly and Measle sleeps on the floor. The only good thing in the house is Basil's amazingly realistic train set, but the thing is Basil never lets Measle even touch it. One day Measle tricks Basil and tells him the bank is offering extra money knowing that Basil loves money. Basil is suspicious but still goes to the bank. Measle rushes to play with Basil's train set. After about ten minutes Basil storms into the room with the train set in it and shouts at Measle. Basil figured out it was a trick because it was Sunday and the bank was closed on Sunday. While Measle cowers in fear Basil says some strange words and Measle starts shrinking. Measle grows down to the size of the plastic people in the train set. Basil gives Measle a carrot to eat and then leaves. While Measle is walking around he hears a grunting noise coming from one of the plastic people. He gives the plastic person some carrot to eat and the plastic person becomes real. Measle finds more plastic poeple and turns them all back into normal people. It turns out that all of the plastic people are people who made Basil mad. One day Basil returns and tries to turn Measle into a cockroach( Measle finds out that Basil is a wizard called a wrathmonk) but the spell backfires and Basil becomes a cockroach. Can Measle and the other people on the train set or will they face the wrath of a wrathmonk?

I like this book because it has a good plot and and lots of action in the middle and end. this book relates to my life because just as Measle has to work together with the others in the train set to defeat Basil, I work together with others to solve problems.

I would say this book is good for sixth graders because it is not too short and it has a good plot and suspense.

Harry Potter an the Deathly Hollows, J.K. Rowling, Fiction

The book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows is a hard to read book. I think thisd book is challenging because of first how long the book is and how many words are on one page. The author also put some words that are hard to understand what it means.

The plot of this book is that Harry Potter is trying to defeat voldemort in this final battle. He first needfs to find the grand wand hidden somewhere in the world. The theme of this amazing book is fiction because none of the magical things in this boomk could happen in real life. The setting is in a mystical castle called hogwartz somewere in a magical world. This has been the setting for all of the books. The characters are Harry Potter, Ron Weasly, and Harmione Granger as best friends they go on many adventures.

The rating of this book in my opinion is a easy 5. I think this book is a 5 because of how the author writes it in such good detail. Some parts I didn't like was that it was the last book of the series. I thought there was nothing I didn't like but the thing
I didn't was that it was the end.

The Boy In the Striped Pajamas, John Boyne, Historical Fiction

The Boy In the Striped Pajamas was not too difficult of a book. Any one from ages 12 and up could definitely read this book. Also, the vocabulary in it was not too difficult because the narrator is a nine-year-old boy.

This book's setting is mainly based at Bruno's( the main character) house near nothing but an Polish concentration camp. The main character in it is the narrator Bruno, and his friend Shmuel are very important to the story and so is Bruno's family.

(Finishing The Boy In the Striped Pajamas caption above)

Also, Bruno's sister; Gretel, and Bruno's parents are very important to the story. The plot of this story is mainly about how Bruno's family moved from Berlin, to the middle of nowhere and what Bruno did when he was alone. Also, A large part of it is Bruno meeting a friend in a concentration camp and how he discovers that his father is killing people like Shmuel. I think that this story was trying to inform you of how bad the Germans were during the Holocaust.

I rather enjoyed this book, therefore, I would rate it a 4.5. I liked it so much because it was like going into the mind of a nine year old child. Also, it was interesting hear the perspective of a German-Nazi general in the Holocuast, from the general's son. Though, I didn't really like how Bruno knew practically nothing about his father's job, the war going on, or anything about his home country.

Tuesdays With Morrie, Mitch Albom, Non-fiction

This book is an easy read, with no swearing or innuendo of any sort. The vocabulary is not very difficult, so anyone 13 and up could read this book.

A former college professor's time on Earth is coming to an end. Mitch Albom, who is a former student of this professor, learns of former mentor's fatal condition after an interview with Ted Koppel on NBC. Albom, realizing what little time he has left with his old teacher, Mitch calls up his teacher and asks if he can come over and discuss some things. He flies out to West Newton, Massachusetts and chats with him, trying to make up for lost time.

I would give this book a 4.5. I gave it this rating because it was a pretty good book. However, there were a few boring patches. Also, Albom makes it sound a little too cheap and sentimental then it should be.

The Big Field, Mike Lupica, Realistic Fiction

This book is a semi-easy read with nothing to worry about at all. No difficult vocab, so anyone 11 and up try it.

Star shortstop Keith "Hutch" Hutchinson is one of the best players on his team. He is also the team's only shortstop and his coach is fine with that. But that all changes when a new player named Darryl comes to town. He is a star shortstop from a different town. He immediately replaces Hutch at shortstop. Hutch moves over to second base, much to his resentment. In order for their team to win, Hutch and Darryl will have to work together.

I would give this book a 3.8. I gave it this rating because it started out as a good book, but then became extremely boring. Even as a baseball fan, I must admit this was a slow book.

The boy and the striped pajamas, John boyne, Historical fiction

This book was moderate for me. The vocabulary used in this was some harsh words and was sometimes hard for me to read. Some words I didn't know and had to look it up in my dictionary.

The plot of the story is in a house with a main character of Bruno. They are having slave houses in the back of their house with the children Bruno and Gretel. The theme is Historical during the holocaust. The setting of the book is in a house in Berlin during the horrible holocost.

My rating of this book is another 5. This book was funny, to sad, to just horrible. It brought great emotion and taught me lessons of my life as well.

Eragon, Christopher Paolini, Fantasy

The book was really hard to read for me. The book had many words that I did not understand which were used in olden times. I learned a lot of words from this book and will try to learn more in the next book.

The plot of this story is Eragon has found an blue egg which happens to be a dragon egg. It grows up to be a huge dragon with its rider Eragon learning how to fight and use magic in many different ways. The theme of this book is fantasy in midevil times. There are magical people in this world as well like ogres, sorcerers, etc. The setting of this book is in the midevil times with the book starting on a farm were Eragon lives. He then travels around this world with many different places he stays. The characters are first the main character Eragon and the evil lord Durza in as well. Murtagh is the archer that goes along with Eragon becoming a better friend everyday. Brom and Arya are Eragon's protectors to make sure he does not get hurt and makes it through alive.

I give this book a 5. This is because it gave so much descrition of the story and also made me more interested each sentence. The author also put much explanation in how each thing happens. The book was great and without it's vocabulary and detal the book would not be as good.

A Time For Dancing; Davida Wills Hurwin; Realisitc Fiction

This book is a moderate read for people probably 11 to 15 years old. I would probably rate this story a 5 because the vocabulary isn't too difficult.

The main characters in this book are Julie and Sam, and they are best friends. The two girls are practically attached at the hip and they do everything together. Later in the story, Julie, or Jules, is diagnosed with cancer. Sam helps tries to help her friends through this difficult time, by putting good thoughts in her head and spending as much time with her as possible. The book emphasizes the relationship between to girls and how they cope with the obstacles in their lives. They are into boys, and love to gossip with each other. This was an amazing book and was definitely worth reading!

I really enjoyed the book A Time for Dancing. I would rate is a 5, because I couldn't put it down; it was so good. Anybody who enjoys sad, romantic, and sometimes funny book would really enjoy this book. I liked this book because it was fast moving and I didn't get lost while reading it. Also, the author switched back from character to the other character. I found that unique that she did that. There wasn't anything I can remember disliking while reading this story.

The name of the book i am reviewing is called ,"code talker". The author of the book is Joseph Bruchac. The genre of the book is historic non fiction.

I would give the book a difficulty level of moderate and the age group this book belongs for is around 10 years. I read this book a couple years go though. I judged this by how easy it is to understand the material, vocab and the maturity level of the writing.

There really wasn't a plot other that a bunch of Navajo fighters in world war two trying to survive the war. The theme of the book was world war two and the setting was the pacific ocean and the united states as well as Japan. The characters of the book was a young Navajo warrior who told his story after the war at an old age

I would give the book a 3 rating. I think this because there wasn't enough information on the battles he fought through his experiences through world war two. one thing that i did enjoy about the book was that it involved things on world war two which i find interesting. One thing that i didn't like was that their wasn't enough information on specifically the fighting. Another thing i did like about code talkers was that there was a full description about the characters experience on world war two from the beginning to the end.

Joy Luck Club; Amy Tan; Realistic Fiction

This book is a moderately difficult read. There are not many inappropriate words however there are quite mature themes in this book. Anyone 13 years old and up could read this book, but you may need to be more mature to understand the real themes of this book.

This book is actually a collection of short stories by Chinese immigrant mothers and their American born daughters. The "Joy Luck Club" is a group of 4 mothers who immigrated from China to America in search of a better life for their children. They face miscommunication, discrimination, and relationship bumps between mother and daughter. One of the main stories is of Jing-mei Woo, who's mother recently passed away, travels to China to meet her lost sisters. It is set in California, however, the mother's relate back to their lives in China. The main theme of this story is the Cultural Transition from Chinese cultures to American customs. The Chinese mothers try to teach their daughters of their heritage, told in a series of stories. The characters are the mothers- An-Mei Hsu, Lindo Jong, and Ying-ying St. Clair- and the daughters- Jing-mei Woo, Rose Jordan Hsu, Waverly Jong, and Lena St. Clair. Each character has a unique story to tell, with Jing-mei's being the most prominent as she tells both her and her mother's stories, since her mother recently died.

I would give this book a solid 5 rating. It has complex themes that may be hard to understand, but it is written very well and I could not put it down. It is a book that is mainly about learning about life, however, it is still one of the best books I've ever read. Anyone will enjoy this book.
Stacy T.

P.S. When reading this book, the characteristics of the mothers loosely relates to how my mom acts sometimes, and how the daughters react to this is sort of like how I would respond. I learned that no matter what you mother does, they still love you, even if they don't show it often.

The Notebook; Nicholas Sparks; Romance

I think that if you are going to read this book, you have a high level of maturity. It's not necessarily the vocabulary that is difficult, it's just the main point of the book is kind of mature. i think that this book is aimed to be from ages 14 and up.

This is one of the cutest, and saddest books that I have ever read. It's about a guy (Noah), and a girl (Allie). They were both really young, and they had a small summer romance. Allie was born into a wealthy family, and her parents didn't really approve of the guy that she liked, Noah because he wasn't wealthy and successful. Noah and Allie go there separate ways, and don't see each other for about 10 years or so. The whole time that they were gone, they were both wishing that they could see each other again. Finally they meet, and Allie has a fiancee that she is about to marry. She loves him, but it's not the same kind of love that she and Noah had. Noah and Allie catch up on their lives, and they realize that they love each other. They get married, and grow old with each other, and later on, Allie develops Alzheimers. Allie can vaguely remeber who Noah is, and at times she will have moments where she does remeber. Noah wrote to Allie letters for two years after Allie went away. Noah read to her everyday from his letters, and that's how sometimes she would remember.

I would rate this book a 5. It is one of my favorite romance novels that I have read. The book is continuously ongoing, and keeps you flipping the pages until you get to the very last word.

Never Mind: A Twin Novel; Avi & Rachel Vail; Realistic Fiction

This book is a very easy read. There are no inappropriate words or themes in this book. Any one from 3rd grade up could read this book.

This story is about 2 siblings- Edward and Meg, and they are twins. They are completely different. Edward is a slacker, goes to an alternative school and doesn't have many friends. Meg is a high achiever who goes to an elite private school and yearns to be in the "right" group. When Meg makes up a story about having a rockstar brother to impress the popular girls, Edward overhears and plans to embarrass Meg in front of everyone at her school. However, his plan backfires and he ends up having to perform with a so called "band" at the biggest party of Meg's high school. The main themes of this book would be not to lie and friendship- who should you befriend and who you want to befriend. Meg tells one lie and it erupts into a huge lie that this whole story is basically based on. This shows that lying will never solve anything and will have sour results. Friendship is a theme because Meg really wants to fit in, but she must realize that these girls are not the type of people she should be friends with. The setting is in a suburb area (like West Bloomfield).

This book would be about a 3 rating. The plot is VERY unrealistic, however, it could happen in a very unlikely case. Although it is a great laugh, there's not very much detail and the main excitement about the book is the humor. Anyone who likes funny books will like this book.

The book my report will be on is called, "soldier boys". the author of the book is dean Hughes and the genre realistic fiction.

I would give the book a 3 difficulty level as well and i would say the correct age group for this book is also 10 or 11 year olds. I read this book when i was about 10 to so i think it was a pretty good difficulty level for me at the time. i came up with this answer by the complexity of the writing and other variables such as vocabulary.

There is not really a plot, but if there was a plot for the book is for two kids both German and American solders to make it through world war two once again. The theme is world war two and the setting of the book are Europe and a little of the united states. The main characters of the book are the German and American soldiers. This book ended very interesting and it is worth reading just for the ending in my opinion, and its very dramatic.

I would give the book a 3 ratting to. One good thing about the book is that it talks about the battles, but they are not very good described in the book as well as other war novels. One negative thing was that the book was kind off hard to follow cause the book went back and forth from characters since they each had a different side of the story. One last thing about the book was that it involved world war two which i like to learn about.

The book i will be writing my last report on is called, "hatchet". The author is Gary Paulsen. The genera of the book is realistic fiction.

I would give this book a difficulty level of moderate as well. The age group appropriate for this book is around 11 to 10 years. To come up with this result i considered the complexity of the literacy.

The plot of the story is for a young bot to survive through harsh woods by being creative to survive. The theme of the book is survival and the setting is the woods and a plane. The characters in this book is the plane driver, the child who gets lost mom and the Brian as the main character. Overall the book perfected all of these to make the book a great one.

I would give this a book a 4, almost a five but not that great. i liked this book because it was very detailed on what Brian did for survival. The book was easy to follow and the writing was also very creative. There was basically nothing negative about this book that i can think.

My Sister’s Keeper; Jodi Picoult; Fiction

I loved this book. I think that it is not that difficult, and that most people can read. There may be some concepts that you might not understand, but overall it’s a great read. I would rate the difficulty level of this book probably a 3 or 4 out of 5.

This book is for someone that maybe likes to read something sad. Everyone once and a while I like to read a book like this, just to make me kind of realize my emotions. This book is about a young girl (Anna), and her relationship with her sister (Kate). Kate has leukemia, and Anna was basically a “designer” baby, that was made so that she could help her sister. This means that Anna has to give Kate things like blood, and later on, a kidney. Anna is sick of being taken in and just giving things to Kate like a rag doll, and she decides to sue her parents of medical emancipation, because she does not want to give her kidney away. Anna goes through a trial, and if Kate doesn’t get her kidney, there is a big chance of her dying. While Anna is in a car, she gets in a crash with her lawyer, and the rest is for you to find out if you want to read it.

I would rate this book a 5 out of 5. If you like suspense, then this is a good big because it has suspense, and much more mixed feelings in it. This book is pretty straightforward, and it gets to the point. It’s pretty fast paced, and it’s a great book to read.

Breaking Dawn; Stephanie Meyer; suspense

This book isn't that hard to read. Occasionally it had some hard vocabulary words but middle school students can understand it with no problem and it doesn't have any swearing. It sometimes has some sexual and violent content. I think it’s a great book for people 11 and up.

This book takes place in a town called Forks in the state of Washington. It also takes place on an island in the Caribbean. This book is about a couple consisting of Edward, a vampire, and Bella who is a human. It is about all their adventures and all the stuff they go through just to be together forever. It also includes Edwards family Carlisle, Esme, Emmet, Alice, Jasper, and Rosalie who are all also vampires. Another main character is Bella’s father, Charlie who is a human and doesn’t know anything about vampires. Jacob, Bella’s best friend is a werewolf which Charlie doesn’t know anything about. They all go through good times and bad and when they go through the bad they have to figure out what to do especially when Bella and Edward get a very unexpected surprise.

On a scale from 1-5 I give this book a 5. I do because it was written with so much detail and such good description that sometimes when I read it I felt like I was right there in real life watching all happen right in front of my eyes.

Marked; P.C. and Kristen Cast; suspense

This book isn’t hard. It doesn’t have hard vocabulary. It does however have some graphic sexual and violent content. All middle school students will be able to understand this book with no problems at all. I think it’s a great book for 10 and up.

This book takes place in the town of Tulsa in Oklahoma. It is about a normal high school girl, named Zoey, who turns into a very “special” vampire and has many odd experiences she has to go through. She meets new friends and absolutely falls in love with her new roommate, Stevie Rae, at her new vampire school called House Of Night. Neferet, her High Mistress, acts like the mom she never had because her mom married an absolute loser who is obsessed with his church and who Zoey absolutely hates. She advances very fast for a fledging, what a vampire is before they turn into an actual vampire, and has to take special classes, which makes her think she’s a freak. She develops a great group of friends who stick with her all the time. Zoey comes to discover that she is a very special and important fledging.

On a scale from 1-5 I would give this book a 4. It was an excellent book with great detail. It was sometimes a little confusing but so worth it in the end. I think everyone should read this book.

Twilight; Stephanie Meyer; suspense

This book is pretty simple. No hard vocabulary words and no bad content. I think people 9 and up can read this book and perfectly fine and understand it easily.

This book takes place in Forks, Washington. It is about a human girl named Bella and a vampire named Edward. It’s about how they meet and how she figures out what he is after he performs abnormal activities that she gets very suspicious about. It’s also hard for her because of what she is forced to hide from her dad, Charlie. Her relationship with Edwards puts Edwards’s whole family, consisting of Carlisle, Esme, Emmet, Alice, Jasper, and Rosalie in great danger. Even though they know about all this danger they decide to keep the relationship which is hard for Edward because to him, her blood is the best smelling he has smelled in his life. Also, Edward is a mind reader. He can read everybody’s mine, except Bella which sometimes is to her advantage. They soon figure out how great of a couple they are and how much they love each other.

On a scale from 1-5, I give this book a 5. The author does a great job of describing things and telling about the characters so it feels like you personally know them and how they act. It is such a great book and I recommend people to read it.

RedWall;Brian Jaques;Fantasy

This books vocabulary isnt really that hard in my opinion it would be intermediate. the vocabulary in the book isnt hard because i think the author is trying to capture the inmaginations of young readers and if the vocabulary is hard then no kid will want to read it. Any student from ages 9 and up should definately read this book.

the book is about this little field mouse named Matthias. now this mouse in in traing to be a priest at the RedWall abbey where he lives. He was drooped at the door of the abbey when he wwas justa a baby and the friar took him in. as the story progresses you will se how matthias gets out of every bad thing that happens to him and ho he saves the abbey from being over run by carnivourous sea rats.

I would give this book a 4 because in the begining its kind of slow and it kind of turns the reader off but if you keep chugging through it towards the middle it gets way better. I loved this book because I love fantasy and I love to read about stuff that could never happen.

The River of Zadaa;D.J. MacHale;realistic fiction

This books vocabulary at some parts is kind of hard but not so challenging words are more common in the book. I think any kid from 11 and up would enjoy this book.

This book is about this boy named Bobby and his whole family was taken by this demon named Saint Dane and this guy goes to a different world in each book and tries to throw the territory as there called in the book into chaos because thats what he thrives on. In this particular book he is on the territory of Zadaa which is the home of one of the other travelers. The travelers are the people who are chosen to travel between the territories and keep the peace. to learn more you will have to read the book.

I would rate this book a 5 because the vocab. isnt that hard and anybody can understand it. I rated this book a 5 because its fast paced and its feels like your just starting a book that you've alwasy wanted to read and thats how every chapter feels.

The Boy In the Striped Pajamas,John Bonyes, Historical Fiction

This book has apporptite vocabulary . I would recomend this book to be there best, and to kids from 8 years old and on. The vocabuary used in the book is used so dramaticly which makes the book the best. I am 13 and I love this book to this day, and they has mad a movie. I have not seen the movie but, herd that the kids should just stick to the book.

It's about nine-year-old Bruno who lives in Germany during World War II.
And during that time, the war between germans and isralies was disguting.
His dad is a soldier and when he finds out he needs a new job they move to this place called out-with. Bruno is not aloud to go across this fence were on the other is Shmuel. Although Bruno comes from a Nazi family and Shmuel is Jewish, they become friends and meet at the same spot and talk whenever they can. They become very close and Bruno knows that he is not suppoed to go over the fence.

From my oppion I would be giving this book about a 5. I loved this book and would never regret not reading it. I liked this book because it is cool how two boys from totally different relgiions and during the war got along so great. The book is coming from a nine year old , so I could almost understand everything. I really understood the novel, and dont want to see the movie becuase of the viloence.

Marley & Me, John Grogan,Nonfiction

This had to be one of the best books in the world from my opinion. I think the age 12-older would be great. There are some hard words for kids younger to read so I would not recommend it for kids who are younger.

This novel was about John and Jenny who were living there life together with no problem living in the perfect little house. Then at the perfect moment they got little Marley. This dog was so cute everyone loved him, but he was also the biggest mess in the world. Running into walls, ripping peoples undergarments. Unfortunately something happened to Marley but, it wasn't good that is what really touched me and made me sad.

I would give this book a 5. I could connect to the happy coupe because i have a dog. My dog is very hyper so i can understand what a crazy dog seems like. If something ever happened to my dog I would feel like a new person. I used to have a Husky and can still remember here to this day and she passed away when I was 5. I would recommend this book to anyone and especially people who love animals and dogs.

Tuesday With Morrie,Mitch Alborn, Non-Fiction

This book was a book that I honestly connected with. I would say the years 10-15 would be the right age that. I love this look to death, it has some tuff vocabulary. If i had a problem with a word I always asked someone, the book is so good because if u don't even understand one word u mess up the whole book.

The characters in this book are one who is Morrie and two who is Mitch. Mitch was Morries student in Collage. Morrie got very sick and stopped being a teacher and just lived life. Mitch was Morries favorite student. After years the two men stopped talking and then Morrie found out that he was going to die from a disease. Morrie was not that sad, he went on with his last few years becoming a new person. He talked about life, and they adventure about it and how u want to spend every minute. He was a great guy who taught everyone a lesson about life, and the good things about it. Morrie had called Mitch, and wanted to see him again before he died because he was his favorite student. Mitch, was going to do something for Morrie, so sweet and he was very good at it.

I would rate this book 5. I asked my parents if they liked it and they loved it, and same with my friends. One of my friends started crying, Morrie was just one ordinary guy who changed peoples life. On the way they feel about life and how you except death to come, but always make the fun of something
